What is Fat Freezing? Does Fat Freezing Work?

These are the two questions we are most often asked.

Fat freezing’, sounds a little… well, gross!

So, what is fat freezing?

Cryolipolysis, the scientific name (but we like to keep things as simple as possible, so we will stick with fat freezing), is an easy, yet effective and clinically proven treatment that targets pockets of subcutaneous fat (the soft squeezy fat that we can pinch).
By freezing the area, we are initiating the apotosis process (a controlled program for cell death). Results are compared to liposuction, but without the downtime, pain and risks of uneven removal.
Due to fat cells freezing at a warmer temperature, the surrounding tissues and skin are not affected by the cold temperatures.
Fat cells die at 0 degrees. 3D Lipo reaches colder temperatures than this to reach deeper levels of fat, comfortably and successfully. Many people believe that the colder the better, however, this isn’t the case (and can actually be uncomfortable and dangerous).
Treatment times are between 30-60 minutes, depending on the applicator size being used.

What Happens to the Fat Cells?

As amazing as it would be for the fat to freeze, die and disappear in the applicators, we do have to be a little more patient than that (all good things comes to those that wait, this is a permanent solution after all).

Over the next 12 weeks those fat cells die, and our body does it’s amazing thing of ridding those nasties. The lymphatic system, which is a network of vessels and nodes that help rid the body of toxins and waste, filters the dead fat cells where they are later eliminated from the body via the bowels, urine and sweat.
Yep, you read right, we really do poop, pee, and sweat fat cells away. Although it sounds quite crude, our bodies are designed to rid the toxic waste from inside, and this is it’s natural way of doing so.
And before you ask, no, you won’t see fat in the toilet bowl (now that would be crazy!).

How Much Fat Will I Lose?

At Skulpt, we have different sized applicators, which are typically targeted for specific areas of the body. Whilst the applicators do pull in and hold a generous amount of fat, it is limited. Of the treated area, 20-40% of the fat cells can be killed from one treatment. Typically, the recommended number of treatments on any only area is 1-4, depending on how much fat there is.
We are a results driven clinic, we are only happy when our clients are happy. Often we have clients coming in for follow ups at 6 weeks post treatment, where our typical cm loss in the abdomen area at this stage is 5-7cm. We often hear of clients feeling and seeing a difference from as early as 3 weeks. Considering the process is progressive, where we expect to only start seeing results at 6 week, these results are phenomenal and ones we are proud of.

Who is Fat Freezing For?

Gym goers who are at their ideal weight tend to be especially good candidates for this treatment, however it is open to everyone with a problem fatty area.
It can be extremely difficult to target specific areas of fat through exercise such as love handles, inner thighs, abdomen (“there’s a six-pack under there somewhere” – sound familiar?)
This treatment is ideal for those that are wanting to contour, tone and shape their bodies on those problem areas.
Those that have larger pockets of subcutaneous fat are also suitable candidates, but will likely require additional treatments. If you can squeeze it, we can freeze it!

So, Does Fat Freezing Really Work?

When you think about it, it is just not possible for fat cells to survive the freezing process, it’d be like you or I walking naked in Antarctica and surviving (we don’t recommend trying!).
Since discovering a reduction in fat cells by linking freezing temperatures with fat cells (you can read more about that on another of our blogs here), there has been many clinical tests proving the procedure to be successful, as well as the countless advocates around the world who are testament to this.
There are many different brands of cryolipolysis machines around various clinics. We would recommend researching the brand of technology those clinics are using. If machines do not have a brand name or the clinic is reluctant in providing it to you, this should be a red flag!
At Skulpt Face & Body, we chose, and are proud to use one of the world’s leading brands. 3D Lipo, which is a multi-award winning brand from Europe.
